Mary Richards

Mary Richards was born in April of 1939 in Roseburg, Minnesota. She is the only child of Walter and Dottie Richards. Prior to relocating to Minnesota, she was engaged to a medical student named bill whom she left after realizing that he would probably never want to get married. After arriving in Minnesota, Mary leases an apartment in a house from her friend.  

Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale was a young lady who was born in  the city of Florence. she was born on May 12,1820 and died on August 13,1910. Florence loved math and science so one day she became a nurse. she would take note of all the people who were alive and how big the city was. when she went to a hospital near the war she soon realized that the soldiers were dying because of a disease in the hospital from the nurses not washing their hands in between surgeries. Florence Nightingale had made sure that every nurse had washed their hands and that with all of them washing their hands almost all of the soldiers went home safely to there homes.
Rosa Parks Rosa Parks was an extremly brave civil rights activist who refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a segregrated bus in the 1950s because she didnt believe that she had to move due to her race even though it was a law at the time. This sparked a fight to end racial segretation. Because of her acts, she was rewarded 3 times (Martin Luther King Jr. Award by the National Association For Advancement of Coloured People, the Congressial Metal and President Metal of Freedom.   "People always said that i didnt give up my seat because I was tired, but that isnt true. Nellie Mooney McClung

Nellie Mooney McClung was a Canadian author, social activist and politician. She was part of the social and moral reform movements in Western Canada in the early 1900s. She is part of The Famous Five, a group of five women who decided they wanted women to be classified as persons. These women are Nellie McClung, Ellie Murphy, Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney and Henrietta Edwards. Nellie was born in 1873 on October 20th and died on September 1st, 1951. She won the right for women to vote and for women to be considered as people, obviously. Her great causes were women's suffrage and the temperance. Women's suffrage is the right for women to vote. She was a good person and an extremely amazing role model, I look up to her. She is an amazing woman.

Emma Gonzalez

Emma Gonzalez Emma Gonzalez is gun control activist and is because she is a survivor of a shooting in 2018 in February at a high school in parkland Florida and since the shooting Gonzalez is a force of resistance through her impassioned speeches and also through her social media presence. and she really wants stricter gun laws and once told everyone in a speech about gun violence.

Wiilma Rudolph

Wilma Goldean Rudolph was born on July 23, 1940, in St. Bethlehem, Tennessee. She had a very large and poor family. Her father, Ed Rudolph, had 11 children from a previous marriage and had 8 more children with Wilmas Mother, Blanche Rudolph. Wilma married two men but they both ended in divorce. Wilma went on to become a pioneering African American track and feild champion, but her trail to victory was bumpy. Wilma was diagnosed with double pnumonia, scarlet fever, and polio as a child. She had problems with her left leg and had to wear a brace. She got help from a physical therapy and she was able to overcome her disabilities. Wilma became a world record holding Olympics champion and international icon is track and feild. Later in life Wilma formed a Wilma Rudolph foundation to promote amateur athletics.  Wilma died on Nevember 12, 1994, in Brentwood, Tennessee, after losing the battle of brain cancer. -Lola

Emma Watson BY: Oliver.Lindsay          Emma Watson was born on April 15, 1990. Emma Watson as we all know her is the brainiac Hermonie. But she also was a part of the UN and a model for Vogue. She was born in Paris and moved to Oxfordshire. Watson attended a dragon school and trained as an actress at the Oxford branch of Stagecoach. Emma Watson launched he for she campaign about gender equality, It was founded on July 20, 2014. She made $60 million for all eight harry potter movies. Emma Watson now lives in London apartment, but also in New York.

Stevie Nicks

Stevie Nicks was born on May 26, 1948, in Phoenix, Arizona. Her parents are Jess and Barbra Nicks. Her brother is Chris Nicks. Stevie is most known for being in the band Fleetwood Mac which she joined in 1975. She left in 1991 and started a solo career but returned inn 1997 for their reunion tour. In her time with Fleetwood mac she won 3 Grammys. Stevie has done duets with Kenny Logins and John Stewart and has made guest appearances with Tom Petty. Stevie is still touring with Fleetwood mac and will be for a while. By Jett

Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman was born on March 10, 1913, in Dorchester Country, Maryland, United States. She married a guy named John Tubman, they then later adopted a girl named Gertie. She was enslaved into slavery but soon escape. Tubman escape in 1849. Harriet is an abolitionist that is knowing for freeing her fellow slaves to freedom through the underground railroad. She made about 19 trips back to the south and saved over 300 people, including her family. In December Harriet received a message saying her niece was going yo be sold into slavery.  She then met John Brown who helped her. After that, someone sold her a little piece of land just off of Auburn, New York. Harriet Tubman died on March 10, 1913, due to pneumonia. Tubman would always be known for her amazing world for leading the slaves to freedom.

Sophie Germain

                              Sophie Germain Sophie Germain was a french mathematician, physicist and philosopher. She was born in paris on April 1st, 1776 and died June 27th, 1831.Her mother was Madeleine Germain and her father was Francois Germain. She had two sisters Madeline Germain and Ambroise Germain. Like a member of a revolution, her life was full of perseverance and hard work.
  Elizabeth Blackwell      Elizabeth Blackwell was born in 1821 and died May 31, 1910, she lived to be 89 years old. She was the first woman to receive a medical  degree in the united states. Elizabeth played an important part in the united states and the united kingdom as social awareness and a moral reformer, and pioneer in promoting education for woman in medicine. Elizabeth Blackwell was a school teacher in order to support her family. She was rejected from each medical school she applied to, except Geneva medical college in which the male students voted on Blackwell's acceptance in 1847, Blackwell became the first woman to attend medical school in the united states .

Malala Yousafzai

Malala was born in Mingora, Pakistan on July 12 1997. She fought for female education. In October 2012 Malala was shot in the left side of her head. She woke up after 10 days in the hospital in Briminggham, England the doctors and nurses told her about the attack. In 2014 she joined her family in the U.K. With her father they started the Malala Fund. In December 2014 for all of her hard work she won the Nobel Peace Prize and she became the youngest ever Nobel Laureate.

Anne Frank

Anne Frank Anne Frank was born on June 12, 1929, she was born in Frankfurt Germany. When she was thirteen she got a book and she decided to right away start a diary so she did some entries to her diary. On July 16, 1942, her family went into hiding behind the bookshelf, which leads to the secret place. That they call their Achterhuis. There were also people that helped the Frank family when they were in hiding. On August 4, 1944, The Nazis found them. And they were arrested.  They were sent to many concentration camps. But the main concentration camp she went to was Bergen-Belsen. Then she died of typhus fever.

Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama Michelle Obama was born on January 17th, 1964, so she is now 56 years old. And if you didn't know, she is married to Barack Obama. She was raised on the South Side of Chicago. She is a graduate of Princeton University. She worked at the law firm Sidley Austin where she met Barack Obama. I think Michelle Obama is inspirational because she married Barack Obama and helped him campaign for president in 2009. This speaks to me because she helped Barack when in need.

Marie Curie

Marie Curie Marie Curie was a French/Polish physicist and chemist and was a pioneer in the field of radioactivity. Even after being denied access to higher education, she still managed to discover two new elements. They were named Polonium and Radium. She was born in Warsaw, Poland, on November 7th, 1867. She died on July 4th, 1934, in, Sancellemoz, Switzerland. Marie Curie is inspirational because, despite all the challenges she faced, she still managed to become one of the most successful scientists in the world. This person spoke to me because I love science and when I grow up I want to be working in an area that involves Science. What that is yet, I don't know. As you can tell Marie Curie was a brilliant Scientist. That concludes my blog.

Mary Anderson

                                    Mary Anderson            Mary Anderson, an American real estate developer, rancher, vulgariser, and inventor.  She was born on February 19, 1866, and died on June 27, 1953 . Her father was John C Anderson, and her mother was Rebecca Anderson. Mary Anderson was known for her invention of the windshield wiper blade. It was invented in 1902 and patented in 1903. She has inspired many people as being a female inventor. Mary Anderson was married to Lenord M. Behrens from 1940 to 1950. Her second marriage was to Cinematographer Leon Shamroy from 1953 until his death in 1974.       

Why Do We Have International Women's Day?

Throughout history, women have been treated differently than men.  Although progress has been made towards protecting and promoting women's rights, according to the United Nations there is still no country in the world where women can claim to have the same rights and opportunities as men.  Women continue to fight for equal pay, as on average they still receive between 30 to 40 percent less than men earn for the same work. On top of that, women make up the majority of the world's 1.3 billion absolute poor.  As we discussed in class throughout reading I Am Malala, there are many countries where girls do not have the same access to education as boys.  We also learned women had to fight for the right to vote, and even more shocking, the right to be considered "persons".
